Forklift Safety Guidelines

ITA’s Forklift Safety day! It is a yearly reminder that you should be thinking about how to keep your lift operators and bystanders safe. Here at Lift Truck Supply want to give you some handy tips, tricks, and products to keep your workplace safe and OSHA violation free!

Follow these helpful guidelines:

  • Make sure all forklift operators in your facility have gone through forklift safety training and have received certification. Many forklift dealers offer this training. Looking for training in Texas? Click Here.
  • Examine forklifts for safety purposes before each shift. Follow this OSHA Guide here and use this log book to record your check.
  • Do not operate a truck that requires maintenance or repair.
  • Inform your supervisor of any identified issues or concerns. Use this Lock-Out kit to keep unsafe lifts from being put into operation.
  • Never leave an unattended running forklift.
  • Know and never exceed the lifting capacity.
  • Keep hands and feet away from moving parts in the mast while the lift is running. This could cause serious injury should an appendage be caught by the chain or fork.
  • Refuel gas power lifts at designated and well-ventilated locations.
  • Use proper safety guidelines and propane PPE when changing out your LP tanks. Check out these propane specific  PPE Kits
  • Forklift batteries should only be handled and maintained by properly trained personnel. Discover battery safety products here.
  • When parking your lift be sure to apply the parking brake and only park in designated locations away from high traffic areas.
  • Avoid hazards on the floor such as slippery or unstable surfaces, bumps, holes, etc.
  • Driving over any debris, large or small, may make the load shift and topple.
  • Wear your seat belt. Seatbelts can be found here
  • Never allow unauthorized people to operate the forklift.
  • Use safety stickers on your lift to remind employees of these various safety guidelines. Need safety stickers for your lift and work area? Click here.
